Based on collaborative research conducted by scholars from different universities and research groups, the book examines the takeover and reactivation by workers of capitalist enterprises facing closure or bankruptcy, as well as the forms of collective production and management that emerge through this process.

One of the study’s important features is that, rather than being limited to a few case studies, it seeks to identify and map worker-recuperated enterprises across Brazil on a national scale. By examining the processes through which these enterprises emerged, the sectors in which they operate, the characteristics of their workforce, and the ways in which production was reorganised, the research provides an overall picture of worker-recuperated enterprises in Brazil. The study thus offers an empirical basis for understanding the scope and key characteristics of the ERT phenomenon in Brazil beyond individual experiences.

One of the central issues addressed in the book is the transformation of workers from wage earners into collective owners of the means of production and actors responsible for managing the enterprise. This transformation requires not only a change in the enterprise’s legal status or ownership structure, but also that workers take over the functions of decision-making, organising production, and managing the enterprise that were previously performed by employers and managers. The recuperation process is therefore also examined as a process through which workers’ capacities for self-management are developed and tested.

The research also focuses on how self-management transforms everyday labour relations within these enterprises. Through an examination of decision-making mechanisms, collective management, the division of labour, wage and income arrangements, and the distribution of responsibilities within the production process, the book explores the new forms of organisation that emerge following the disappearance of the boss. In this respect, it opens up a discussion of the relationship between an enterprise adopting a cooperative form and the development of genuinely democratic and collective workers’ management.

Recuperation, however, does not entirely free these enterprises from the conditions of the capitalist economy. Problems such as access to finance and credit, the supply of raw materials, technology, production capacity, marketing, and the ability to survive in the market remain significant for worker-managed enterprises. While workers seek to establish more democratic and solidaristic relations within the enterprise, they must also ensure its economic sustainability. The study therefore makes visible both the potential of workers’ self-management and the material and institutional constraints it encounters under market conditions.

In these respects, Empresas Recuperadas por Trabalhadores no Brasil constitutes one of the key empirical sources on workers’ self-management and worker-recuperated enterprises in Brazil. Complementing the extensive Argentina-centred literature on worker-recuperated enterprises with the Brazilian experience, the study shows that workers’ takeovers are not merely crisis responses aimed at preserving employment; they can also generate new practices concerning ownership, management, labour relations, and the democratic organisation of production.

Flávio Chedid Henriques, Vanessa Moreira Sígolo, Sandra Rufino, Fernanda Santos Araújo, Vicente Nepomuceno, Mariana
