Serkan Öngel, Şirketlerden Kooperatiflere, Rekabetten Dayanışmaya is an interdisciplinary collection that discusses cooperatives as alternative forms of economic and social organisation developing on the basis of solidarity, participation, and collective organisation in opposition to competitive market relations. Published after the 2019 volume Krize Karşı Kooperatifler, the book examines the renewed development of cooperative experiences in Turkey and around the world, while considering both the contradictions cooperatives encounter within the capitalist market and their potential to create more democratic economic relations.

One of the book’s central questions is whether cooperatives, while existing within capitalist market relations, can develop solidaristic and democratic practices that go beyond those relations. Proceeding from the observation that historical experiences show that cooperatives can play a role both in constructing alternative social relations and in reproducing the existing system, the book does not regard cooperatives as inherently non-capitalist structures. Instead, it focuses on their autonomy from the state, capital, and the market; members’ participation in decision-making processes; relations of collective ownership and management; and the historical and social conditions within which cooperatives develop.

The collection brings together experiences from a wide range of fields in contemporary cooperativism. The studies range from educational and social cooperatives to energy, agricultural, housing, and financial cooperatives, and from the Mondragon experience to agricultural cooperatives in the Soviet Union, making it possible to compare the roles cooperatives can assume under different economic and political conditions. Through contemporary examples such as renewable energy cooperatives, social cooperativism, and producer cooperatives, the book also discusses the relationships between cooperativism and ecological transformation, the provision of social needs, and new forms of public organisation.

One of the book’s most notable sections from the perspective of workers’ control and self-management examines the potential and limitations of worker cooperatives within market relations. Starting from questions about whether workers can manage a workplace entirely by themselves and whether they can collectively organise processes such as production, sales, and marketing, worker cooperatives are connected to debates on industrial democracy, economic democracy, and autonomy. Through different historical and contemporary experiences, the book shows that worker cooperatives are not merely an alternative form of enterprise but organisations with the potential to transform relations of decision-making and control over production, while also facing significant contradictions due to market pressures and the social conditions in which they operate.

Another notable aspect of the collection in relation to contemporary forms of work is its attention to cooperative alternatives in the information technology and platform economy. Ahmet Gire’s study of the Albatros Information Technology Cooperative Initiative examines the efforts of IT workers to organise collectively and gain a say over their own production in response to competition, performance pressures, precariousness, and long working hours in the sector. The chapter on platform cooperatives, meanwhile, discusses the possibilities of alternative platforms based on common ownership, democratic governance, open source, transparency, and participation in response to the inequalities created by digital platform companies, and considers how technologies such as blockchain might be used in such forms of organisation.

Şirketlerden Kooperatiflere, Rekabetten Dayanışmaya is an important work that approaches cooperatives not merely as an alternative model of ownership or enterprise, but as part of efforts to develop solidarity instead of competition, participation instead of hierarchy, and collective decision-making instead of the control of capital in the organisation of production and social needs. Its chapters on worker cooperatives, the Albatros experience, and platform cooperatives are particularly valuable for reconsidering workers’ control and self-management under contemporary labour relations and the conditions of the digital economy. At the same time, by not overlooking the limitations cooperatives face within market and capitalist relations, the book provides a comprehensive reference for assessing both the possibilities and contradictions of cooperativism.

Uygar Dursun Yıldırım and F.
