Serkan \u00d6ngel and Uygar Dursun Y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m, <em>Krize Kar\u015f\u0131 Kooperatifler<\/em> is <strong>an interdisciplinary collection that examines cooperatives in the context of economic crises, solidarity, collective organisation, and alternative economic relations<\/strong>. The book discusses cooperatives not merely as a particular form of enterprise or ownership, but as experiences of collective organisation developed in response to the social problems generated by market relations and economic crises. By considering historical and contemporary experiences in Turkey alongside international developments, it aims to assess the possibilities and limitations of cooperativism from different perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the book\u2019s starting points is <strong>the relationship between the weakening of trade unions, cooperatives, and other forms of collective organisation under neoliberal transformation and the deepening of economic and social crises<\/strong>. While drawing attention to how the process of globalisation, particularly since the 1970s, has eroded the foundations of collective action and solidarity, the editors emphasise that today\u2019s economic crisis is accompanied by crises in food, ecology, and urban services. Under these conditions, cooperative experiences aimed at reorganising the processes of production, distribution, and consumption on the basis of solidarity, cooperation, and horizontal organisation have once again gained importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collection <strong>examines the relationships that cooperativism in Turkey has established with the state, local governments, and trade unions through historical and contemporary examples<\/strong>. Municipal-cooperative relations and the search for alternative forms of public organisation are explored through experiences such as the \u0130zmir Metropolitan Municipality and Tire Milk Cooperative, and the Ovac\u0131k Municipality and Ovac\u0131k Agricultural Development Cooperative, while agricultural cooperativism and the case of Fiskobirlik are discussed in the context of state policies and the transformation of agriculture. Kad\u0131k\u00f6y Cooperative, one of the contemporary consumer cooperatives, is examined in terms of solidaristic relations of production and consumption, the food system, and new forms of organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the book\u2019s major themes is <strong>the historical relationship between trade unions and cooperatives<\/strong>. The activities of trade unions in Turkey that extended beyond wages and working conditions are examined through consumer and housing cooperatives, workers\u2019 markets, educational and recreational facilities, and production initiatives. Particularly noteworthy are the experiences of the T\u00fcrkiye Maden-\u0130\u015f Union with M\u0130TES, M\u0130GSAN, and M\u0130PA\u015e, which demonstrate the labour movement\u2019s efforts to create alternative institutions in the spheres of production and consumption. The collection also addresses the <strong>\u201cpeople\u2019s sector\u201d (halk sekt\u00f6r\u00fc)<\/strong> approach debated during the 1970s and different political assessments within the trade union movement, thereby opening up a discussion of the relationship between cooperativism and broader projects of social transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study is not limited to Turkey. <strong>The renewed international significance of cooperatives following the 2008 crisis<\/strong>, their position in relation to neoliberal globalisation, and European Union policies towards cooperatives are also among the book\u2019s areas of discussion. In addition, its examination of issues such as corporate governance and agency theory in cooperatives demonstrates that the democratic and solidaristic characteristics of cooperatives cannot be considered independently of organisational and managerial problems. Rather than assuming that cooperatives constitute an automatic solution to crises, the book therefore also questions their relationships with the market, the state, and the institutional structures within which they operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Krize Kar\u015f\u0131 Kooperatifler<\/em> is <strong>an important collective work that examines cooperativism in Turkey in conjunction with debates on the solidarity economy, the trade union movement, local governments, alternative forms of public organisation, and social transformation<\/strong>. From the perspective of workers\u2019 control and self-management, the experiences of trade union\u2013cooperative relations, the collective institutions created by workers in the spheres of production and consumption, and questions of democratic management are particularly significant. At the same time, the book does not reduce cooperativism solely to workers\u2019 self-management; it covers a broader field ranging from agricultural and consumer cooperatives to municipal-cooperative relations and international cooperative policies. In this respect, the study provides a comprehensive reference for considering together the historical experiences of cooperatives in Turkey and the alternative initiatives that have re-emerged in recent years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>F.
