Discussing the characteristics that distinguish worker cooperatives from capitalist enterprises and other types of cooperatives, the book examines the theoretical foundations, economic functioning, strengths and weaknesses, and applications in different countries of this organisational form in which workers are both the employees and members of the enterprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first part of the study is devoted to <strong>the theoretical framework of worker producer cooperatives<\/strong>. G\u00fcven discusses the potential of worker cooperatives to eliminate exploitation in the workplace, advance workplace democracy, establish a more egalitarian form of organisation, and increase workers\u2019 influence over management, while also addressing the problems these enterprises may encounter. Through issues such as scale, capital structure, management, market conditions, and employment, the book examines the tension between the economic viability of worker cooperatives and their democratic and social objectives. Rather than idealising worker cooperatives, it therefore seeks to assess both their possibilities and their structural limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An important feature of the book is that it <strong>situates worker cooperatives within broader debates on industrial democracy and social transformation<\/strong>. G\u00fcven compares different approaches to whether worker cooperatives should be understood as a means of democratising capitalist enterprises, as a social policy mechanism for creating employment and alleviating economic problems, or as an element of a more comprehensive social and economic transformation. Within this framework, the relationship between the pressures arising from worker cooperatives\u2019 operation within the market and the principles of collective ownership and democratic management constitutes one of the central discussions of the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second part focuses on <strong>the historical development and concrete experiences of worker producer cooperatives in various countries<\/strong>. France, Italy, Britain, and Spain are examined in detail, while experiences in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, and several Third World countries are also discussed. The book considers not only individual cooperatives but also their federations and other higher-level organisations, economic activities, relations with the state and local governments, support mechanisms, and the historical and institutional conditions in which they developed. In this way, it seeks to identify the successful and unsuccessful aspects of different models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final part of the study discusses <strong>the possibilities for developing industrial worker cooperatives in Turkey<\/strong>. G\u00fcven asks why worker cooperatives have failed to develop into a strong and sustained movement in Turkey, while assessing the conditions under which lessons might be drawn from the experiences of Western countries and identifying potential areas in which such cooperatives could be established. Considering areas such as company rescue operations, the privatisation of state-owned enterprises, and the provision of local services as possible fields of application, he explores the prospects for worker cooperatives within Turkey\u2019s specific economic, social, administrative, and political conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>End\u00fcstriyel \u0130\u015f\u00e7i Kooperatifleri<\/em> is <strong>an early and important study that discusses the relationships between worker ownership, workplace democracy, collective management, and the market from the perspective of Turkey<\/strong>. Its particular attention to both the democratic potential of worker cooperatives and the economic and organisational constraints they face under market conditions makes it valuable for debates on workers\u2019 control and self-management.
