Comprising thirteen articles written by researchers, social movement activists, and digital platform workers, the book focuses particularly on the Brazilian experience while also engaging with global debates on platform work.

The book’s first axis focuses on how platform capitalism restructures labour relations. It examines the place of digital platforms within the capitalist mode of production, algorithmic and digital control, the precarization of labour, the health and working conditions of platform workers, the role of labour law and regulation, and the forms of collective struggle developed by workers. The Breques dos Apps actions organized by app-based workers in Brazil during the pandemic and recent initiatives to regulate platform work also form part of this discussion.

The second axis moves beyond critique to raise the question of how self-managed and solidarity-based alternatives can be built within the platform economy. While the book discusses platform cooperativism in this context, it does not reduce the issue solely to cooperative ownership. The idea of “solidarity platformization,” the relationships between cooperativism and the solidarity economy, and the ways in which worker collectives can use digital technologies without reproducing the organizational logic of large corporate platforms are among the book’s central questions.

An important dimension of this discussion concerns how technology itself is designed and who controls it. Through examples such as the experience of EITA, a self-managed technology collective working in the service of social movements, the participatory development of routing algorithms incorporating solidarity values, and the Technology Unit of the Homeless Workers’ Movement (MTST), the book examines cooperation between software developers and platform workers. In this way, it raises the question of whether an alternative platform requires not only a different ownership structure but also the democratization of technological development processes and algorithmic design.

The book also questions the idea that self-managed platforms should “compete” with capitalist platforms under the same conditions. Rather than leaving worker collectives on their own in the face of the capital, data, technological infrastructure, and market power possessed by large corporations, it argues for broader relations of solidarity among cooperatives, social movements, trade unions, and public policies. Self-management is therefore approached not merely as a matter of the internal organization of individual platform enterprises, but within a perspective of transformation connected to the broader institutional and social infrastructure of the solidarity economy.

In this respect, Um horizonte de lutas para a autogestão is an important contemporary work that brings together the critique of platform capitalism with debates on workers’ self-management, platform cooperativism, the solidarity economy, and democratic technology development. Rather than viewing digital technology as inherently emancipatory or inevitably capitalist, the book discusses how the ownership, design, and use of technology can be collectively reorganized. The central question thus becomes not only whether alternatives to capitalist platforms can be created, but whether platformization itself can be organized differently under the control of workers and social collectives.

Ricardo Toledo Neder and Flávio Chedid Henriques (eds.), Um horizonte de lutas para a autogestão: o trabalho organizado por plataforma digital, Marília/SP: Lutas Anticapital, 2024, 324 pp.

[105

post-1710","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-resources
["GET
