The work approaches self-management not merely as a model for the organization and governance of enterprises, but within a broader perspective of democratic transformation aimed at enabling workers and citizens to have a direct say in decisions that affect them, from production to social life.

One of the encyclopedia’s important features is that it brings together experiences of workers’ control and self-management within a broad historical and geographical framework. It covers a wide range of experiences, from the Paris Commune, workers’ control and factory committees during the Russian Revolution, the Spanish Revolution, Yugoslav self-management, the Hungarian workers’ councils, and Solidarność in Poland to worker-recuperated enterprises in Argentina, workers’ control and cooperatives in Venezuela, and more recent cases such as Lip, Tower Colliery, Vio.Me, RiMaflow, and New Era Windows. Alongside Algeria, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay, the United States, France, Italy, Britain, Greece, and many other countries, Turkey is also included in the encyclopedia, with the Kazova experience examined in the context of production by workers without bosses.

The work does not merely document historical and contemporary cases; it also offers a broad theoretical field for discussing the relationship of self-management to ownership, workers’ control, workers’ councils, cooperativism, nationalization, socialization, direct democracy, the market, planning, and the state. Through texts by thinkers from different intellectual and political traditions, including Marx, Engels, Proudhon, Trotsky, Ernest Mandel, Henri Lefebvre, Pierre Naville, Michel Raptis, and Catherine Samary, the tensions between the historical and theoretical meanings of self-management are brought into view.

In the encyclopedia’s introduction, self-management is understood not as a political project belonging to the past, but as a contemporary form of struggle and organization that emerges within capitalist society while carrying the potential to transcend existing social relations. At the same time, the work does not overlook the limitations faced by cooperatives and self-managed initiatives within the capitalist market. Problems such as bureaucratization, normalization, the erosion of their initial democratic dynamism, and market pressures are treated as fundamental contradictions within experiences of self-management. Self-management is thus presented neither as an unproblematic alternative that can develop spontaneously within capitalism nor as an undertaking doomed from the outset to fail under existing conditions.

The scope of Autogestion : L’Encyclopédie internationale also extends beyond the boundaries of the workplace. Fields such as education and culture, ecology and energy transition, feminism, the city, urbanism, and housing are examined from the perspective of self-management. This broadening of scope demonstrates that the encyclopedia understands self-management not simply as the management of enterprises by their workers, but as a question of the democratic organization of production, services, common goods, and social life. The section devoted to the international Economía de los Trabajadores meetings also incorporates into this framework the international connections and shared debates developed among experiences of workers’ self-management in different countries.

In this respect, Autogestion : L’Encyclopédie internationale is a comprehensive reference work that brings together the history and theory of workers’ control and self-management with concrete experiences from different geographical contexts in a single source. The value of the encyclopedia lies not only in the large number of examples it assembles, but also in its treatment of self-management as an open and continually evolving field of struggle extending from democratization at the level of the workplace to the broader question of social transformation.

Association Autogestion, Autogestion : L’Encyclopédie internationale, Paris: Éditions Syllepse, 2015, 2368 pp.

[105

post-1673","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-resources
["GET
